restoration stage by stage
An
upright piano with keyboard tuning pins and strings and frame all removed
to allow the crack in the soundboard to be repaired.

An
upright piano having its dampers regulated without the hammers.

The
ebony case is stripped and sanded.

The
case is filled and sanded many times to ensure the desired finish.

All
the parts including legs and liar are dismantled ready for French Polishing.

The
finish is built up to high gloss, the ultimate test of a French Polishers
skill.

After
de stringing the iron frame is removed in preparation for spaying.

The
soundboard is now exposed allowing any cracks to be repaired with spruce
shims.

The
frame is returned ready for dressing with felt before the piano is re-strung.

The
soundboard is then sanded and varnished.
